Are you ready for the Academic world

I’ve been thinking of the question that “who is right for academic world’ and “what makes someone stand out in that field”. I did the research and found following advices very helpful.

First and the most important is to be persevere. 4~5 years for a PhD is a big commitment in time and efforts. And getting a PhD degree isn’t the end but the start. Soon you’ll enter into tenure-track (keep in mind that the job market for PhD graduate is full of competition) and is likely to spend your whole life in academic world. So it’s really a long-run and you need to demonstrate your perseverance. But what forms your perseverance. The answer is interest and enthusiasm of knowledge and research.

Ask following questions before you make up your mind to go for PhD and even during the whole study period.

“Are You Motivated to Do This . . . .
Does a research and teaching career appeal to you?
Does the idea of generating and disseminating knowledge excite you?

Keep asking these two questions again and again and answer them without thinking.  Yes! I like it and i feel energic every monring when i know the whole day i’ll be busy with teaching, research and exploring knowledge.  A slight  smile shows and you even not notice.

But what techniques will make you stand out from a pool of greatest talent. Following are some suggestions gaven by different faculties.

1. Prepare a plan and set goal earlier.

2. Learn from others (professors, dissertation advisors, PhD fellows in and out of the institutions)

3. Be know for your work. Focus on an unified stream of research rather than dabbling in a veriaty of unrealted areas.

4. Find the right balance and set a delibrate pace.

None of above is related to intellectual capability because after careful process of screening and selecting new Phd studnets, there is little variance in all cadidates’ intellect. So what you really matter is your interest and commitment in research and some wisdom to get things done better and faster.

Hope everyone “can accept that what cann’t be changed, has the encourage to change that what can be changed and the wisdom to know the difference “.

Confucius said(2)

Following is what we call confucius in China.

至聖先師,Zhìshèngxiānshī, lit. “The Most Sage Venerated Late Teacher”

至聖, Zhìshèng, “the Greatest Sage

先師, Xiānshī, literally meaning “first teacher”.

萬世師表,Wànshìshībiǎo, “Role Model for Teachers through the Ages”

Teaching Method

One of the deepest teachings of Confucius may have been the superiority of personal exemplification over explicit rules of behavior. His moral teachings emphasized self-cultivation, emulation of moral exemplars, and the attainment of skilled judgment rather than knowledge of rules, Confucius’s ethics may be considered a type of virtue ethics. His teachings rarely rely on reasoned argument, and ethical ideals and methods are conveyed more indirectly, through allusions, innuendo, and even tautology. This is why his teachings need to be examined and put into proper context in order to be understood. A good example is found in this famous anecdote:

This quote is my favourite and i believe it’s the right answer to “is there any one word that could guide a person throughout life?”

Zi gong (a disciple of Confucius) asked: “Is there any one word that could guide a person throughout life?”
The Master replied: “How about ‘shu’ [reciprocity]: never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself?”

“reciprocity” is the principal that everyone should cultivate in mind. A person who only concerns about himself would never have a positive impact on others, therefore no influcence has been created and everything about him is gone as he passes away.  But why there are always some exceptional people who can build long-lasting influence over decades or even a century.  It’s because they devoted themselves for public interests and of couse they have “reciprocity” in their mind or even other interests came first than their owns.

You cann’t name a counterexample of above principal not being applied. It’s always true. Therefore since today if you want to build an influcence, please consider other’s benefits and interests.  What you don’t wish for yourself, don’t do to others.

Confucious Said (1)

Google “Confucious”, you can find tons of information. I always prefer to take a look at the wikipedia first.  You can easily get familiar with his background and his whole life.  Confucious is widely known history figure in China or even the world. So what make him so famous, a person lived 2ooo years ago? I guess it’s his wisdoms, which is reflected by what he said or what current people “quote”.

I studies “analects of confucious” since i was a kid. But at that time what i knew about study is to memerize rather than to understand. So very few left once i forgot after the exam.  Now if you ask me to remember ten quotes of “Confucious Said”, i’m unlikely able to. So it’s also good for me to review what i learned as a kid and maybe after another 20 years life experience, i’ll have new understanding of these old knowledge.

I’m think of listing the most ten quotes and analyse them with my personal understanding. Feel free to comment.

Advantages of being a Business School Professor

I’ve been thinking of this topic for a while.  Acedemic isn’t for everyone and places a lot of challenges. But the awards can be tremendous.  I’m trying to get more data and information to share. I’ll update this post from time to time.

First, let’s take a look what salary can a fresh Business school Phd graduate earn.  Normally Business school provides at least 5 concentrations for students to select and some big schools can offer up to 10. The most popular are Finance, Accounting, Marketing since salary for these three fields are competatively high.

check following link to see the average salary for Phd graduate in marketing. You may be surprised to find that professors(even assistants) are really well paid.
