China vs. the U.S.

This is a big topic and also a hottest topic. But I’m not going to discuss it like a politician nor an economist. I’m going to make a miniature comparison in a particular industry, telecom/IT related industry, which is the sector I’m working at and passionate about.

My idea about this topic was initiated with the discussion with my director.  He introduced me an article in internal magazine about working hard and making contributions to company. Then i came up with numerous thoughts and ideas about China vs. US.

Q1: In china, the society embraces the idea of working hard and contributing to country and society. While in US, as i know and believe, the  society actively support individual success, to realize your own “american dream”.

Q2: However, in contrast to the idea of making contribution to society and others. in China, according to my own experience from primary school to university, I wasn’t taught a lesson or haven’t had a project with others to learn about team work. I was judged by my scores of exams which were always done by myself. Not any work was required cooperation.  To make it worse, as a single child in my family, my whole family treated me so well that i felt myself as a king. I admitted that i had great difficulties to adapt myself to the society/job environment and learn to work with others and to be a good team player.
While in US, according to my preparation of MBA and the application essays, the society emphasizes the importance of being a team player even though in parallel it encourage personal success and realization.
What a paradox in both of these two countries.

Now Let’s take a look at the result.  A comparison of the NO.1 of Fortune 500 in china in the telecom/IT/Electronic sector and other well-known US high-tech companies.

The NO.1 in china is Huawei Technology. I’m very proud of it, a high-tech company, which developed from a start-up to a giant enterprise with over 95000 employees within 20 years.

Let’s compare its financial record with those of other US high-tech companies (2009)

                            Revenue  (billion)                    Net Profit                         Employees

Huawei                          21.3                                 2.68                                90000

Apple                            42.0                                  8.4                                 34300

Microsoft                      58.4                                14.5                                 93000

Google                          23.6                                  6.5                                   20000

Ebay                             8.7                                   2.3                                    15500

Cisco                            36.1                                 6.1                                     63000

The difference is efficiency. Why the US peers master the efficiency of making money and profit? Because each of above US companies created their own business model and creat a high barrier for competitors to enter.  Then why always US companies are able to lead the trend and creat innovative business model/product/capital model again and again? That’s the question i want to find out during my future MBA in US.

Telecom trends in next 10 years (2)

Let’s get into the details of one of these four trends—digital home

Iphone has leaded the innovative breakthrough in handset and drive the mobile internet a big step. Everyone to be connected to internet anytime anywhere isn’t just a fairy tale. But what’s next?

It’s digital home. In the last ten years, people are having analog TV to LED TV, a tape recorder to DVD or even hard driver recorder. However telecom hasn’t changed the home scenario very much in term of interaction between different devices.

Imagine this: all the electronic devices (such as TV, set-top box, recorder, PC, media phone) at home can “talk to each other” and be controlled by a core device ”smart kit’. All the devices are connected by wifi and all the contents at different devices can be shared seamless. Just by one flick, the contents you are reading at your phone can synchronized to TV simultaneously. Furthermore, with home Gateway, all your devices at home can access internet through fix or wireless. And vice verse be accessed by the devices outside of home. Basically you can take all your contents at home with you and control most of devises remotely through digital home solution.

So what are the benefits for our life? First, it brings us convenience. Easy sharing contents through wifi free us from copying from one device to another. Easy access allows us to retreat what we want remotely. Second, it provides us fantastic user experience. Almost everything can be done by one flick.

And how about telecom operators? The convenience of accessing the content seamless and without the limitation of time and distance will drive users to consume more bandwidth. While the growth of speed/bandwidth is the growth of the whole telecom industry. So the digital may become an application to sustain and consume the growing speed/bandwidth capacity.

What makes above happen is the key technology name “dlna’. Google it!

Telecom trends in next 10 years (1)

Let’s start the first series: telecom trends in next 10 years. I’ve worked in this industry for 3 years which doesn’t give enough credit to say i’m a expert. But i did see rapid change in telecom and just want to share my cents. 3 years ago, most of peopel just use phone to make calls and hence voice business can account up to 80% of operators’ revenue; also most of handsets don’t have complex functions and cann’t be treated as smart digital terminals. Now what are the greatest changes? First wireless boardband provides opportunity for anyone to be connected to internet anywhere; Second smart phone (Android, blackberrey and iphone[most exceptional]) give us the best platform and tools to use the wireless boardband. Plus the abundant apps change the whole business model. Why? Apps means services and now along with the margin of equipment decreased dramatically, only services can differatiated youself. And what makes Apps exceptional? Because it stands for one of the trends-Cloud Computing.

Let’s see what professional said about the telecom trends in next 10 years. Who can claim to be professional and trustworthy? I would suggest they are.  Top 5 telecom vendors: Ericsson, Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens, Motorola.  Furthermore top telecom operators should have some words about it as well.  They are Vodafone, China Mobile, NTT Docomo and AT&T.

But let’s start one by one. I’d like to pick the one who i’m most familar with. Here is what Huawei believe.

Beyond 2010: Four Trends that Will Shape the Next Decade of Telecom.
1.Beyond population, the Internet of Things is creating a subscriber base of 50 billion.
2. Beyond voice communications, booming mobile broadband is the next engine of telecom.
3. Beyond bitpipe, cloud computing brings new opportunities driven by a new business model.
4. Beyond telecom, home networks will open new markets to operators because of the disruptive user experience.

Economic crisis deepen?

Had some chit chat with colleagues during lunch and we had some arguments on the economic crisis. I feel optimistic while the other feel very pessimistic. They argued that in china the real estate and stock market will crash while RMB value will be decreased. The best way for us to do is to keep US dollar. They claimed US will be the ultimate winner in this crisis while Europe and emerging markets will hurt badly. I joked about why not all of us immigrate to US and be part of its free lunch. They answered “why not? if you have the way”.

Is the economic crisis so serious? Greece of course is under big trouble while Europe certainly cann’t get rid of it. Besides, the highest unemployment rate in Spain and Portugal can be the last straw to crash Europe economic. Now the investors are very afraid of Euro and the cash return back to US for US public debt. Will the same happen to China? I’ve lost almost 20% of my investment in stock market and it seems the downturn cann’t be recovered recently. Shall i sell all of my rest to keep the cash for safety? Shall i start to exchange to US dollar now since i’m planning to have my MBA in NA next year. My finacial situtation will be deteriorated seriouly if above happen.

Here is related article to read. I admire the author very much for his accurate analysis(in chinese).
